This course introduces tsunami science, following the tsunami life-cycle:
- generation
- propagation
- impact
Generation describes the causes of tsunamis, with a particular emphasis on undersea earthquakes. Some introductory seismic theory is provided as background.
Propagation describes how tsunamis travel through the deep ocean, how they are modelled and how they can be detected at deep ocean buoys.
Impacts on land the and coastal marine environment are discussed and detection of tsunamis on sea-level gauges is introduced.
