The Aerodrome Weather Observer (AWO) certification is transitioning to the Aeronautical Meteorological Observer (AMO) Competency.

The AWO Class B course remains available only for participants who are currently undertaking training in this course.

  • AWO Class B certification is required by those who make visual weather observations for dissemination via formats other than METAR/SPECI, such as the ATIS broadcast or as plain language reports via radio. Typical personnel who seek Class B certification are Airservices Australia and RAAF Air Traffic Services staff, Certified Air/Ground Radio Operators and Aerodrome Reporting Officers.


Note: The AWO certification program is intended for persons with an aviation industry requirement to provide observations and is not available for the public generally.

AWO Class B Initial certification is comprised of theory modules and a practical module. The theory modules are completed online, with the practical module usually completed in the workplace.
